23.01.2006 Head coach of Nizhny Novgorod FBC-30 Valeriy Mochalov

Analysis: Aino Moilanen playing in the first round of Russia Championship.

Aino was allowed to participate in the first match of Russia Championship on having had the only one training together with the team "Nizhny Novgorod FBC-30". It happened the day before the first round in Novodvinsk. I observed her playing the centre position in the "majority" and as the centre forward in the second weakest line during 1,5 hour of training.

From the very first minutes Aino was involved into the game. She tried to contact with the field players. Every time she asked me to explain the next exercise in details. During playing the "majority" Moilanen showed a perfect school: she did not keep a ball, tried to be helpful - it was my demand for playing "envelope". I was also satisfied with her playing the "square". Aino shot two goals and once assisted successfully during six games into "two" (together -12). In that case I decided to include Aino into the first "special line" of playing "majority" in the first match against "Burevestnick PGU ".

The second part of training, which took place at 12 a.m. on 18.12.2005, was devoted to contacting of the equal lines. A. Moilanen played as the centre forward of the second line. But this "five" failed - 2:4. Aino shot a goal with M. Kitaeva assist out of the goal cage. But she failed to shoot bullet. Later I analysed that it was her weak point and she needed to train it. As I realised Aino usually shot the bullet trying to send the ball into the left up corner of the goal cage.

During the first match against "Burevestnick PGU" (1:1) A. Moilanen was playing as the center forward of the second line. The game appeared very complicated and difficult as for Aino and the team in the whole. She seemed to be under the inner pressure and it was the reason why she managed to play not in an appropriate way: she tried to play the ball in one touch and not to keep the ball. It was not specific for the centre forward playing. All those facts were negative for the team. Especially I was greatly disappointed when Aino did not attack the goal cage when there was an excellent opportunity for it. During break I said, "Aino, you should attack the gates, even if you do not have an opportunity for it from your point of view. I want you feel the game as it is." But I failed to persuade her. Our Finnish legionnaire was so overwhelmed with the thoughts of how her actions would influence on the game of our team that she could not solve with her moods. Playing the "majority" in the position "envelope" she was not successful either. The girls noticed that and they tried not to play the centre. That was why I replaced her.

It seems to me it was the worst game of Aino. After match I had a conversation with Aino. She had valued her playing to be not on the high level. It was the key moment for me. I tried to explain Aino that the problem was in her. She needed to be courage and initiative in order to play better. Having analysed the training that was the day before I asked Aino, "Why not to try the defender position in the first line?!..." My decision was also connected with the next game against "Vodnick" the champion of Russia in 2005.

I consider Aino to be a born defender even though she had been the nominal centre forward in her Finnish club "NST -Lappeenranta". http://www.nst-lappeenranta.net/

She has got all necessary qualities for it:
-An excellent play discipline (10);
-Analysis of own actions and the opposite's actions (10);
-Strong and correct spinner forehand shot (9);
-Availability to choose the key position (9);
-Quick and correct forehand assist (9);
-Possibility to value and to foresee the field situation (9);
-Willing to fight (8);
-Good stick technique (8).

However Aino has got weak points:
-Not strong enough sweeper, sleeper and insweeper forehands shots;
-Low start;
-Not very good physical form for the moment (it was the criteria, which I took in attention when I decided to appoint her as a defender. But I think Aino would not have had the problem of such kind if she had been trained within the team).

Later I observed a new Aino in the game against "Vodnick" (6:5). She contacted with the top defender J. Sadretdinova (the player of the national team) very well. That field position strengthened the first line. And the second line found its usual place together with M. Durneva on the centre position. Then I returned A. Moilanen to the first line of the "majority" but as the right defender when one opposite was delivered from the field. And it was her acme hour. I saw her attacks, there were 6 shots and only 1 passed the gates in the middle. During the third period Aino had the 100% shot on goal: she had played the opposites over, began moving against the goalkeeper 1*1 from the right and… unexpectedly she passed aback alongside the goal cage, what was not necessary at all. While defending her goal cage Aino played without serious mistakes and she was rather selfish. That game helped us to find out a new good player in Aino for our team.

During the game against "Unix" (17:1) A. Moilanen attacked a lot and made her first goal assist. But we passed the goal into our goal cage because of Aino's mistake at the very end of match. As for Aino she stayed her place in the first "special line" and it was the result of her brilliant playing of the "majority". Besides, I tried her playing the "minority" and then I began to include her into that "special line".

I didn't see how Aino was playing during the 4th game of the first round against "Burevestnick PGU" (5:6). As Moilanen told it was her fault when we passed the goal and she didn't use the only 100% goal moment - she failed to shoot being in the worth position. But the coaches and the players were of another opinion. They told that Aino managed to play rather successfully; she spent 60% of the time, playing as in the equal lines as in the "majority" and the "minority".

The 2nd game against "Vodnick" occurred the best one for Aino and for the team in the whole (7:3). A. Moilanen fulfilled my personal task - to play nearer to the field players of the attacking team, to involve the opposites into the fight in the middle of the field, to be open in the centre and by the sides for long and middle shots. Aino made 7-8 shots, half of them were into the goal cage. It is a nice characteristic for a defender! She spent over 65% of playing in the field because in that match we used only three defenders.
I think it was Aino who did her best for our team victory. And that game showed Aino how she should play within our team. It is very important because the fight for the gold medals in Russia Championships stands in front of us.

Unfortunately Aino was injured (the trauma of the hip's muscle) during the 1st period of the last game against "Unix" (9:1). She had to leave the field. D. Alexandrov, the team doctor, examined her and Aino received the first aid. One more thing should be pointed out. Three (!) goals were not scored as if they were shot from the goalkeeper area.
